Wave
Styrofoam and monofilament, dimensions variable in Installation, 2022
Drifting above viewers’ heads is a tsunami-like Wave that is actually made from thousands of repurposed coffee cups held together with glue. This complex system spreads, grows—floats from the ceiling. An accompanying wall text tells viewers that it’s not too late to heal the planet and ourselves.
This work was first exhibited as part of a residency program developed by a local Jacksonville curator who matched artists with nonprofits and grassroots organizations. Under this aegis, my solo show transformed a vacant retail space into a downtown gallery space. I chose to address climate injustice and created works like Wave in a larger show that held space for the discarded, the abandoned, and the lost. In the room with Wave, we hosted community conversations that sought answers to questions of sustainability.
In Nature, change is the most reliable constant; decay and life, the brutal and the beautiful, learn to co-exist.
